Red Dress Theory: What Wearing Red for a Month Taught Me
The Power of Red
The colour red has most definitely been the colour of the season and has taken the internet by storm! Whether it’s Christmas time or going into Valentine's Day a red dress will for sure be a great statement for your next event. However, this is not a new trend it dates back to the red dress theory which in summary associates that people particularly men, find women wearing red more attractive, this is not just an assumption but links back to colour psychology and evolutionary biology. To test this theory, I wore red for both whether it was, red nails, a dress or an accessory to test the theory.
What is the Red Dress Theory?
The colour red has been linked to represent power, love and seduction evident in both fashion and art. From an evolutionary perspective, the colour red may be associated with fertility and health. Although this has historical significance the red theory has become a popular trend on social media. The ‘red nail theory’ took TikTok by storm many girls saying that so many men had never approached them while their nails were painted red. I will have red nails most of the time, I can’t say that I saw much of a difference as to when I had red nails. However, if we are going to talk about red clothing I have always received so many compliments, whether it’s a dress or a top so many people both men and women seem to love the colour.
The Experiment: 30 Days of Red
So, what happens when you wear red for 30 days? Let’s unpack it!
II have always loved the colour red and it has always been essential in my wardrobe, therefore these 30 days were a dream for me. Red nails are my absolute favourite! I found that so many people are just fascinated by red and due to its eye-catching nature I received so many compliments daily, it was for sure a confidence boost! Although I am obsessed with a signature red dress, red nails are my absolute favourite! I think they are just so classic and chic always adding a touch touch of elegance to everything I am wearing. My mum has always told me that red is more of a winter colour and red nails ‘aren’t very summer’, I beg to differ on this opinion, I think red is such a powerful and beautiful colour that can be worn all year round. Not only is it essential colour for your wardrobe,I have also learnt that red is such a great colour to wear for so many events. A red mini is great for everyday wear and elevates your look. A red maxi is gorgeous and was a major part of my 30 days of red, it’s perfect to dress up and down depending on where you are going. If I was lucky enough to have a formal event in the past 30 days I would be spoiled for choice, with so many beautiful options from Dress for a Night including different fabrics and lengths which are suitable for so many occasions.
Styling Tips for Rocking a Red Dress
Red can sometimes be a confusing colour to style, it is essential to style appropriately for what you are doing that day. Firstly, there are so many shades of red available whether it’s bold red or burgundy it’s important to try them all on to make sure you have your perfect fit. A red mini is great for casual wear if it is a terry towelling or linen material, from personal experience as a Dress for a Night stylist black is the best pairing with red however, don’t ever be scared to go for a monochromatic look with a different shade of red! Red formal dresses are a whole other story, it very much depends on your personal preference and the style, fabric or exact colour you are looking for. Always keep it in the back of your mind. What is most suitable for your event? A floor-length dress, or a maxi maybe even a midi. Look no further than Dress for a Night with unlimited possibilities you are sure to find your perfect dress.
Although I love a red nail, there are so many other possibilities. As red is such a powerful colour make sure that you accessories the rest of your outfit to accentuate the colour instead of overpowering it. A simple French nail or Hailey Beiber glazed doughnut nail goes a long way to perfectly add to your outfit, never be scared of sparkles either! When it comes to jewellery, gold or silver jewellery is perfect and dependent on your personal preference. Just always remember that red is the standout of your outfit!
